BIOBARRIER® II IS THE "ULTIMATE" LANDSCAPE FABRIC

In the War on Weeds, the weeds are winning, except where Biobarrier® II Weed Control System is installed. A unique, high-tech method of controlling weed growth, Biobarrier II combines nodules containing trifluralin and a proven geotextile drainage fabric to create an effective, easy-to-install and cost-efficient method of controlling weeds. It is guaranteed for 10 years.

Weeds are unwelcome, unsightly and can sometimes contribute to visibility hazards in a variety of situations, but Biobarrier II is the long-term solution in all of them. Placed on the ground like a landscape fabric and covered with mulch or stone, Biobarrier II creates a zone where roots cannot sustain growth; this zone is up to one inch on each side of the fabric.

The root-free weed-control zone is created because the permanently attached nodules on the heavy-duty landscape fabric slowly and constantly release trifluralin. The trifluralin has a short half life as it biodegrades, but because the nodules continue to release it, the zone is always there. Trifluralin, which has been used for more than 35 years to control weed growth between rows of food crops, prevents root tip cells from dividing, which is how roots grow to sustain the plant. Trees and shrubs planted through the fabric have roots that grow below the herbicide zone so they are not impacted and can continue growing normally. Weed seeds may germinate in the cover material but wither and wilt when their roots are restricted by the herbicide zone.

Biobarrier II is effective in a wide range of applications. In landscaped areas, weeds compete with desired plants for water, air, space and nutrients, and they can harbor disease and insects. Pulling them by hand is hard work that must be repeated frequently because roots are often left behind to grow again and because new seeds germinate. Using chemicals to kill weeds is often detrimental to the landscaped area because the spray can drift onto desired plants.

In other situations, weeds interfere with equipment (such as utility equipment) or the ability to see (such as along highways). In addition, sending workers into these areas can be hazardous and expensive. Biobarrier II offers a long-term solution whether the problem is one of aesthetics or safety.

Because it is a fabric and follows ground contours, Biobarrier II is easy to install. Simply clear the area of rocks and clumps of plant material and unroll the fabric. If trees or ornamental shrubs are already planted, just place the fabric around them. (Remember: Biobarrier II affects only root tips, so pull it close to the tree or shrub trunk.) Cover Biobarrier II with the organic or inorganic cover material of your choice. Place unused product in the package it came in, seal the package and store it away from sunlight. If for some reason you ever need to remove the Biobarrier II from the ground, dispose of it as suggested in the packaging instructions.

Trifluralin has been used in the agricultural industry for more than 35 years, making it one of the most utilized and tested chemicals in the world. It has an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) acute and toxicity rating of class IV, the mildest class (acute oral: LD50, (rats) 10,000 mg/kg), making it slightly more toxic than sugar but less than salt. Trifluralin has an extremely low water solubility of 0.3 ppm, making it unlikely to leach. It tightly attaches to soil, so it doesn't tend to migrate, and it decomposes in the ground in six months or less, so it doesn't persist in the soil. It is not systemic, so it is not taken up into the plant. An applicator's license for Biobarrier II is not required by the U.S. EPA. Local restrictions may apply.
